My name is Josh Lamar, and I founded 111design in 2000. 111design was a graphic & web design company, and occasionally we would build servers & networks for our clients.
One day in 2003, We were building a website and computer network, when the owner asked if we
would build him a custom system for his home. We did, and he was pleasently surprised by the cost of it. He repeatedly asked if we comped the labor costs or cut him a discount... we didnt.
That experience made me stop and think. For years I've watched with mild frustration as people paid a premium for underpowerd, unreliable, expensive computers from major manufacturers & local shops.
99% of the time they could have had more for less.
The problem is that electronics stores, computer shops, and even major manufacturers keep an inventory of parts which dictates what thier computers cost. In order to stay profitable they have to sell thier parts for more than they paid or take a loss. Nobody stays in business by taking a loss, so you pay a little more than what they paid.
We solve this problem by ordering your parts rather than stocking them.
Becasue we do it this way, you get more for your budget with us despite it being custom work.
Ive personally been building custom computer systems since 1990. I spend roughly 20 hours a week
researching current and upcoming technologies. This knowlege means we know what value really is.
